ABSTRACT

Adolf Hitler, delighted to ignore the social prejudices of the past, gave his consent to the marriage. To emphasize the approval, both Hitler and Goering attended the wedding as witnesses. Hitler, furious at having been duped, demanded Blomberg's resignation. Heinrich Himmler submitted to Hitler documents allegedly proving that the general, the highest-ranking officer in the German army, had been guilty of homosexual relations and had been paying blackmail to another homosexual over the course of several years. Against Hitler's strict orders, and unaware at the time that the whole affair was a frame-up engineered by the Gestapo, Hossbach informed Fritsch of the charges against him. Hitler used the occasion as an excuse for a complete shake-up of the top army command. Hitler at first tried to dissuade Beck from resigning, but suddenly switched his tactics and dismissed him.
