ABSTRACT

Most of Argentina's history was written in the interior. The Great Depression marked the beginning of a new phase in Argentina's history. The world financial crisis that resulted from the second oil shock in 1979 and the attempts of the United States (US) to deal with it by raising interest rates cut off the flow of loans to Argentina; the country was caught short. The parallels between the insurrection in Chiapas, Mexico, that began in January 1994, and the rioting in Argentina that began a few days earlier were widely discussed in the Argentine press. This chapter discusses the Argentina's financial crisis, the US and Argentine press repeatedly mentioned the announcement that a major paper and wood pulp manufacturer in the Argentine Northeast could not service its debt. The overvalued peso remains at the center of Argentina's crisis, since it discourages exports and encourages imports.
