ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the historic and central South African conflict of apartheid and the way in which this has affected every aspect of South African life for the past four and a half decades. It describes different normative conflicts, which contained within them numerous assumptions about the nature of change in a developing society and the relationship between ends and means in the struggle to transform South Africa and create a better system of government for the country. The chapter looks at the remarkable political transition that has taken place in South Africa since 1991. It examines the role of business as a mediating institution; and shows business's role under apartheid and during the transition toward a new democratic order. The chapter examines some of the potential divisions and conflicts that confront the "new South Africa", and focuses on one particular challenge, that of the reestablishment of rule by law inside the country.
