ABSTRACT
The internationalization of the subject of extremism is useful for legitimizing the lobbying efforts and participation of nongovernmental, intergovernmental, and regional organizations committed to fighting the extreme right. It is the international community's responsibility to direct and mobilize these efforts in the launching of a broad, consistent, and persistent assault on the extreme right. This chapter provides examples that highlight the extreme right's utilization of advances in modern technology to circumvent legal restrictions and promote its activities. The message of hatred and intolerance that the extreme right represents has always been repudiated by the international community as contravening its underlying values and principles. The European Convention of Human Rights, signed in 1950 and in effect since 1953, provides the framework of principles for the members of the Council of Europe. To demonstrate the pattern of decisions since 1979, a pattern that has clearly disadvantaged the far right, the chapter provides some representative cases.
