ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of the analysis for the minor neighborhood employers. It should be noted that the four industries constituting minor neighborhood employers are also producer-oriented; they are construction, transportation, wholesale, and information services. The variables associated with working- and middle-class neighborhoods would be associated with employment in the construction industry. Employment in the transportation services extends throughout all urban neighborhoods, although most is concentrated in areas with less than 30 percent poverty. Wholesaling is spread throughout all types of urban neighborhoods. Wholesale trade includes establishments engaged in selling merchandise to retailers as well as those that sell to contractors or other business users. Information services are the final group of industries in the minor-employer category. These include printing and publishing, communications, advertising, credit reporting and collections, motion pictures, and engineering and management services. Employment in the industry is concentrated in the wealthier neighborhoods with the exception of the 7,000 employees in information services working in extreme-poverty neighborhoods.
