ABSTRACT
The case for community justice is a call for a fundamental rethinking of the purpose and practice of justice. Community justice typically emphasizes the local area as the unit of analysis. The victims' rights movement reached something or a zenith when political leaders came together supporting a victims' rights amendment to the US Constitution. In place of the adversarial contest between the state and an accused citizen, the idea of community justice concentrates on a problem-solving process designed to restore safety to the places where people live. Resolution will include elements such as treatment, restitution, community service, and public sanctions as evidence of a new commitment to live safely among neighbors. Community justice is an endeavor to embrace community development initiatives and move beyond the traditionally narrow mandate of law enforcement. A community justice initiative can De paid for by diverting dollars from less-effective current expenditures to more-effective, community-oriented initiatives.
