ABSTRACT

This chapter is about luxury goods and commodities. It describes coca as a means of easing inter-household relationships. By stressing the differences between coca as a local commodity and cocaine as a global commodity; it develops the theme of how things become commodities. It then discusses the negative impact of the cocaine economy, although a modest proposal is made to expand the legitimate consumption of coca in Feru and elsewhere. The chapter ends with a discussion of the concept of illegitimate cultural appropriation, which is always an issue in the conversion of objects into commodities.
