ABSTRACT

Martin Sherman is best known in the United States for his play Bent, which has become a central work of resistance and liberation in the gay literary and theatrical canon. The popular use of the pink triangle, the badge of gayness in Nazi concentration camps, as a symbol for gay liberation came from the success of Bent. A Madhouse in Goa has never been produced in New York. It opened at the Lyric Hammersmith, in West London, one of the most important centers of new and experimental theatre, with a fine cast led by Vanessa Redgrave and Rupert Graves. A Madhouse in Goa is really two related one-act plays about personal and artistic betrayal. A Madhouse in Goa was first performed at the Lyric Hammersmith, London, on 28 April 1989. It later moved to the Apollo Theatre with the same cast. The production was directed by Robert Allan Ackerman and designed by Ultz.
