ABSTRACT

The worldwide confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, which is expressed most sharply in the proliferation of nuclear weapons, is the central geopolitical fact of the second half of the twentieth century. The Cold War can be resolved through series of peaceful negotiations between the superpowers. The US people are bombarded daily by the media and most elected officials with propaganda which rationalizes the Cold War, and the dire necessity to spend billions of dollars on conventional and nuclear weapons. Frequently, the electorate supports those candidates who are most bellicose on the subject of Soviet expansionism. In order to reverse the logic of the Cold War, white Americans must begin to view themselves as a distinct minority in a world dominated by people of color. Peace between the superpowers is directly linked to the evolution of democratic rights, economic development, and social justice in the third world periphery.
