ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on a set of categories of sexuality and how those categories fare online and in social media, but there are a number of logical reasons for doing so. Viewers expressed confusion about whether the young person appearing in the video was a boy or girl, and this androgynous appearance was interpreted through both gender and sexuality lenses. In order to gain a broader perspective, we have to be willing to consider a wider range of perspectives and expertise. Just as slash democratizes the world of fiction, social media can democratize the social world by giving greater agency to individuals who often feel constrained. The studies highlight the ways that people play and engage in sexuality focused identity-work using the tools of social media.
