ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book deals with a concise expression of a common and popular view about sexual matters, namely, that ‘there is only one rule on the sex game, and that’s consent’. It demonstrates both that the rule is a far from simple one and that it is not so evident that it is or should be the only rule of the game. The criticism maintains that it is a mistake to think of consent as a foundation for sexual morality because of how consent must be conceived. The quoted instance of the criticism does, however, indicate a crucial ambiguity. The line of criticism shares much with a familiar critique of ‘liberalism’ which can be found within contemporary social and political philosophy, especially feminist and communitarian writings.
