ABSTRACT

The first civil war, spearheaded by Anya-Nya soldiers born in and operating from Equatoria, the second civil war would be led by Dinka from the Upper Nile and Bahr al-Ghazal. It aired during the afternoon "siesta" hours, and it soon won a large audience among northerners because it covered happenings in Khartoum that were never reported in a media under Numayri's control. By year's end they had severely mauled an ill-disciplined murahileen band operating southeast of Abyei, and for the first time the raiders were driven back across Bahr al-Arab. In western Sudan some 6 million inhabitants of Kordofan and Darfur began to experience the most severe drought and famine conditions village elders could recall. Sudan Ministry of Plant Protection officials found the shipment was infested by flour beetles, and by the time more fumigation finally allowed the release of the shipment, the direct route north to Rumbek was closed following its mining by the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA).
