ABSTRACT
A political identity may be based in specific historical claims about the nature of that oppression and then assert the subjectivity of the marked trait as a justification for a unique set of political positions. There is no necessary content to any particular political identity, and the attribution of the meaning or content of a political identity is usually thought to involve the community of those who embrace that identity. Collectively, the groups that have defined their views around an embrace of a politics of identity are often referred to as the "new social movements". An excellent portrayal of a story is the HBO production The Burning Season, which gives one of the richest and most challenging portrayals of an environmentalist on film. It tells the true story of Chico Mendes, for some time the leader of the Rural Workers Union in Brazil.
