ABSTRACT

Privatization is an undeniable reality in higher education. It is being driven by six forces. The first driving force is the rise of an information economy. The second driving force behind privatization in higher education is changing students. The third factor is the cost of higher education. Fourth: new technologies. The fifth force driving privatization in higher education: changing public attitudes. The sixth and final force driving privatization in higher education: changing attitudes and demands of higher education patrons. Furthermore, higher education has a dependable revenue stream with a good cash flow. Higher education has three critical characteristics. The first is reputation or, in business terms, a "brand" in the field of education. The second is authorization to provide education—;;accreditation, certification, and licensure. The third element is content. Colleges and universities are in the business of discovering and disseminating content—;;information and knowledge—;;and today content is king.
