ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the origins of the Islamic movements in Algeria and the political and social factors that led to their prominence. It analyzes the evolution of the Islamic movements within four distinct phases: silent protest; mobilization and recruitment; political ascent; and armed path. After the banning of the Association of Algerian Scholars, other founding members of the association tried to resurrect it by establishing a new one to continue the reformist message of the scholars. Malik Ben Nabi's Ideas have influenced a segment of Algerian intellectuals who later became known as Tayar al-Jaz'ara in the Islamic movement. The influence of the Muslim Brothers in Algeria is reflected in two parties: Hamas and al-Nahda. The League of Islamic Call was established in March 1989 under the leadership of Shaykh Ahmed Sahnoun, who is highly respected by all Islamic forces in Algeria, and included the leadership of the main Islamic movements.
