ABSTRACT

The two young women made a striking pair as they exited the plane and stepped down the ramp to the tarmac at the Cedar Rapids Airport in eastern Iowa. Wearing matching holokü in a bright lavender, green, and white tropical print, their shiny waist-length black hair blowing in the breeze, each walked self-consciously in unfamiliar high-heeled sandals. They had just journeyed nearly halfway around the world to begin college classes in Michigan. Getting to Iowa was not without mishap.
