ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Umed. He is a second-year student at the Slovyansky University. His family is quite modern, and Umed knows he will be allowed to choose his own wife. His parents may want some input but will not try to choose for him. He thinks he is very lucky in this respect, because few of his fellow students will have the same luxury. Knowing how complicated it would be to have a girlfriend without intending marriage, he does not even try. However, a large number of his classmates do have such friendships. According to Umed this is very unlikely. He believes that if this is why the girls have such friendships, they are deceiving themselves. The girls said that many of their female classmates saw romantic friendships as a way to choose their husbands, while the boys indicated that for them the point of having a relationship was to have a good time.
