ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to present paint a broad picture that helps readers' formulate their own personal worldview stand on globalization. Of globalization's three goals—significantly reducing poverty, creating responsive governments, and instigating world peace—the goal most often discussed is poverty reduction. The problem concerns the status of women during globalization. Women are an important group to focus on because they are overrepresented among the ranks of the poor and are more likely to be the caregivers for young children. The single most prominent cause for the failures that have occurred under globalization is the nature of unfettered capitalism as an incomplete theory of distributive justice. The problem areas threaten to undercut the valuable contribution that economic interdependence can bring to help reduce poverty, encourage responsive government, and create the conditions for a more peaceful world. The solutions are presented in three paths: no globalization, more globalization on unfettered free-market principles, and a restructured globalization.
