ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the structure of the labor force and labor market in Mexico Megacity. It examines such elements as occupation, economic activity, worker concerns and settlements, and age structure and workforce projections. The attribute of professional/technical/managerial occupations encompasses the census categories professional, technical, and managers/directors. Occupational sectors can be examined by selecting broad categories and comparing them for the Federal District, State of Mexico. The women were part of age cohorts that included large streams of migration into Mexico City. It may be that economic pressures of migration combined with more acceptance of women in the labor force led to the large differences for those age groups. Economic activity is a critical variable measuring the number of people who are able and willing to work, although they may be out of work temporarily. Unemployment and underemployment are generally highly correlated with other labor force variables, although less so with certain income and salaried worker attributes.
