ABSTRACT

Mexico City constitutes an economic engine that is at the heart of the Mexican national economy. This chapter discusses the growth and development of the economy of Mexico City. Nationally, paper, printing, and publishing industries are centered on Mexico City. The chapter briefly looks at the Megacity's state and municipio government revenues. Particular attention is given to high level professional and financial services. The chapter also discusses the relationship among economic variables and among the dimensions outlined and presents an economic cluster analysis. It examines public finance and economic sectors of manufacturing, commerce, communications, and services. The chapter presents the correlations of economic variables and an economic cluster analysis. The economic cluster analysis is based on the following economic variables from the overall cluster analysis: metal production and machinery composition, wholesale commerce composition, professional/technical/specialized service composition, economic activity, unemployment, and owners/employers/salaried.
