ABSTRACT

Statement: I’m the child of a strange generation that named all its daughters Lisa or Jennifer. I was the only Minal, which means “fish,” and writing helps me swim through these strange waters. After visiting South Africa recently, I am convinced that the biggest task facing the Indian community in the United States is to fight our own bigotry and prejudice—toward gays and lesbians, other people of color, women with short hair, and various castes and classes among ourselves.
