ABSTRACT
What we need to complete the analogy between SU(2) and an arbitrary simple Lie algebra is a notion of positivity for the weights. Then we can discuss things like raising and lowering operators, and the “highest weight” in a meaningful way. What we want is a definition that ensures that every nonzero weight is either positive or negative, and that if μ is positive, −μ is negative and vice versa.
