ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The book analyzes how Latin America and its world role have been reshaped by the stunning international developments of the past few years and by the underlying transformations that, in turn, gave rise to such global sea changes. It focuses on inter-American relations after the Cold War. The book explores Latin America's relations with major extrahemispheric regions. It also focuses on the policy responses by the nations of the Western Hemisphere, individually and collectively, to the challenges posed by the new world, with all its disorder and variety. The book examines whether the circumstances of the years ahead bid fair for new—and genuine—partnerships between Latin America and the United States. It describes the Impact of global change and how have they been affecting Latin America.
