ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores crises that are all connected. They range from the local to the global and from the concrete and specific to the ideological. Invisible crises can be the results of natural processes, such as the environment or an apparently dormant volcano, that do not reveal their threat to the casual observer until it is too late. The book begins with the race toward total control of that media mainstream. Invisible crises include the hidden or obscured and the dark side of those very much in the limelight. It projects trendy technocratic fantasies - and their antidote. The new frontier of the struggle for vision and for access to visibility is thus the mainstream of the cultural frontier that now pervades every home.
