ABSTRACT

In Forrest Gump (the 1995 Oscar-winning movie starring Tom Hanks and Sally Field) there is a scene that shows Mrs. Gump announcing dinner to the guests in her bed-and-breakfast establishment on the outskirts of an Alabama town. One of the house guests is Elvis Presley (although we are not yet certain of his identity), and the young Forrest Gump is in Elvis's room dancing to his music. The two "boys" are interrupted by Mrs. Gump, who first scolds Forrest for pestering the guest and then announces that it is time to eat. Elvis indicates that Forrest is not a bother and thanks the hostess for the dinnertime reminder. As Mrs. Gump leaves the room, Elvis turns back to Forrest and says: "Hey man, show me that crazy little walk you just did there." Sitting on the edge of his bed with guitar in lap, Elvis recommences "Hound Dog," and Forrest (who wears leg braces) moves from the waist down in stiff but syncopated jerks that can best be described as funky. "I started moving around to the music, swinging my hips," says Forrest as he narrates this part of his life-story.
