ABSTRACT

I'd like to introduce my talk with the way Elvis liked to introduce one of his songs. The song was called "Walk a Mile in My Shoes." The introduction and the song itself were obscure until a couple of years ago, but now it's part of the mainstream Elvisology as we speak of it here today. He would say, "You never stood in that man's shoes or seen the world through his eyes, stood and watched with helpless hands while the heart inside you dies. So help your brother along the way, no matter where he starts. For the same God that made you made him too, these men with broken hearts." Today I would like to sing my song as Elvis sang, to give my speech in my own voice and in my own shoes. 1
