ABSTRACT

Every speaker at this conference has been giving his or her bona fide, so let me give you mine. I was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, about a year and a half after Elvis. I can't really say I knew him, although most people in Tupelo say they did. We were at Milam Junior High School at the same time. He was a grade ahead. I am a graduate of the University of Mississippi, and I remember once as a student at Ole Miss driving over to Tupelo from Oxford with an older coed, who was embarrassed to ask her steady to take her to the Elvis concert at the Tupelo fair. The main thing I remember from that concert were all those screaming girls, including an awful lot of coeds from Ole Miss. 1
