ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of the book. The book focuses on how television news works. Every day the particulars of television news—the news stories—are different, but the tone and feel of the newscast remains the same. Even though news events are a variable entity, television news requires consistency to build and hold the loyalty. In general, early evening news is similar to late evening news, and some of the stories addressed aired in the early evening as well. The book attempts to represent the stories exactly as they appeared on television. The stories presented are offered as prototypical news stories, but there are, of course, exceptions. Some local news reports have attempted to buck the "Live at Five" trend and bolster substance at the expense of splash, sometimes at the cost of decreased viewership and revenues.
