ABSTRACT

All three rationales for concern over the economic security of people are reflected in the US National Security Strategy and are seen as key to advancing American security, prosperity, and values. This chapter illustrates the connection between those themes and the multifaceted problem of providing economic security needs for all through equitable and sustainable development. It briefly summarizes the evolution, and expansion, of the concept of development—including its particular relevance for the United States and within the UN system. The chapter examines the development efforts in the context of two key interrelated challenges that must be resolved in order to facilitate not only development but also security and stability in the world. The diversity of agencies reflects the realization that development consists of many interrelated human security challenges ranging from poverty and human rights to resource scarcity, climate change, and good governance.
