ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Environmental conditions do create social and economic stress that can lead to conflict, disease, and the other threats to human security. Further, climate change threatens the US foreign policy goals of promoting development, good governance, and sustainable agriculture and reducing conflict in developing countries. Recognition of the importance of human security for global prosperity and stability provides an additional strategic political rationale for managing environmental security. In this regard, climate change will have several implications, as numerous adverse impacts are expected for some populations in terms of: access to clean water, access to sufficient food, stable health conditions, ecosystem resources, and security of settlements. The chapter demonstrates, addressing climate change from a global perspective will continue to be elusive, as national governments seek either to promote development, thereby increasing use of hydrocarbons, or to sustain high levels of human development without compromising economic activity.
