ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how kagandahang loob can provide a perspective for understanding issues of bioethics. In the process, it also establishes the affinity of the concept to feminine ethics. The chapter examines the literal meanings of the words that make up the term kagandahang loob, showing that its core meaning is located in the intentional aspects of human actions. It also examines both the uses of kagandahang loob in ordinary ethical discourse and the uses of related terms in feminine ethical discourse. In Filipino ethics the concept of kagandahang loob is expressed routinely and in multiple ways. The opposite of kagandahang loob is kasamaang loob, which may refer either to evil deeds or to evil intentions that attend human actions. After the features that indicate the affinity of kagandahang loob ethics to feminine approaches have been noted, the task ahead is to identify and appreciate the characteristics that differentiate the former perspective from the latter.
