ABSTRACT

From a feminist perspective, it is a glaring inadequacy that the proliferating literature on the globalization of democracy and movements rarely engages with its gender-specific dimensions. Feminists are relatively late entrants into globalization debates. Feminists have provided compelling evidence that almost all aspects of globalization have a gendered dimension. Globalization processes are shaping and being shaped by feminist mobilization for change. Globalizing developments present important challenges to feminist theoretical frameworks. Feminist studies of the East Central European context confirm that women's bodies have been a particular site of struggle over detraditionalization. Feminist studies of East Central Europe confirm that neoliberal conditionality has had especially detrimental effects for women. Many feminist groups are involved in mainstreaming feminist concerns within international organizations. Theorizations of the feminist movement have tended toward the poles of universalization or particularism. The radical feminist framework may be preventing the full implications of an interactive approach to power being accepted.
