The Legal Profession The astonishing growth in the number of lawyers in the United States since World War II has been accompanied by an unprecedented increase in demand for legal services from both business clients and individuals. By 1990, the legal profession had become a $91 billion a year service industry, employing more than 940,000 people, and surpassing the medical profession in the number of licensed professionals (MacCrate 1992).
