ABSTRACT

H ow does the work we do really change who we are? Over time, our labor says asmuch about our choices in life as it does our limits or expectations therein. For women and men, the ability to work is often affected by their personal obligations and choices at home or at least away from work. And when we leave work, either temporarily or for good, we fully realize the impact and import of that work identity and status in our lives. The following articles, which conclude the book, all attest to how work can speak volumes about an individual's demands and social status at various stages over the life course.
