ABSTRACT

Beyond the development of an international media marketplace, there is the phenomenon of open cross-border communication. From a legal perspective, the United Nations and international law are unprepared to deal with the power and reach of the media giants. The merging of law and technology is creating stress within the traditional structure of national and international law. Cyber war is another international issue. Cybercrimes and cyber terrorism are national security problems according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Traditionally, national governments in countries without a history of free expression were able to tightly control the transmission of printed materials by filtering mail. The battle for free expression in cyberspace has become a matter of citizen activism. It has been noted that the global nature of cyberspace alters the social, political, and economic world. This chapter explored the implications of global communities in cyberspace.
