ABSTRACT
We begin our study of phonons with a brief review of lattice dynamics and the quantization of the phonon field. It is recommended to the reader who is unfamiliar with these topics that he consult one of the standard texts (Peierls 1 or Ziman, 2 for example) where more of the mathematical details and physical discussion may be found.
