ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the pedagogical hopefulness that flourished, and at times floundered, at four schools that implemented the Interdisciplinary Project during the Workers' Party administration. Joao Sussumu Hirata School (Sussumu School) is located in the southern peripheral urban area of Pedreira at the edge of Sao Paulo's municipal jurisdiction. The school was selected as one of the ten pilot sites for the Inter Project. Sussumu School may not have been selected as a pilot site during a less radical and politically oriented administration. According to the teachers at Sussumu School who participated in the pilot experience, the Inter Project did not signify the mere acquisition of yet another new educational program but instead marked the beginning of a transformative process in terms of their professional identity and educational practice. A Nuclei of Educational Action (NAE) team member recalls, their goal was to implement the process to the greatest extent possible.
