One day in 1991, the wife of Roger’s assistant, Khurshid Ahmed—herself heavily pregnant at the time—was leading her goat into her courtyard in Jhakri Firdausi began laughing and instructed us to fill out one of our maternity-history forms for the goat, because it too was about to kid. When we first arrived in 1982, however, our interests in childbearing were scarcely ever met with such lightheartedness.
