ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses the notable characteristics of American politics. Defining each gap as the largest difference between demographic groups that were classified for each category in exit polls, Barack Obama's demographic bases of support were African Americans, those with no religious affiliation, younger voters, poorer voters, females, and the non-South. The religion gap on abortion, in fact, is larger than any other gap on an issue. The religion gap is not nearly as prominent for the death penalty as it is for the other cultural issues of gay marriage and abortion. The possible link among the different demographic gaps examined in this book poses the question of whether or not each gap has an independent effect and to what degree.
