ABSTRACT

Management science is primarily concerned with the development and application of quantitative analyses to find solutions to problems faced by managers of public and private organizations. Management science provides a methodology to assist managerial decision-making. The techniques used in management science help to provide a more rational and scientific basis for making these decisions. Over time the techniques that make up the field have grown to reflect the large-scale computing capacities available and to make use of the new communication and transportation technologies. The establishment of operations research and management science as a profession was indicated by two events: the development of academic programs to train individuals specifically for management science positions and the formation of professional associations. The growth of professional associations to facilitate research and development, to enhance communication among members, and to act as advocate for the emerging profession occurred very early.
