ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three advertisements that make claims. It gives examples of how to use the tools of critical inquiry introduced in this chapter to address some initial reactions to these ads and one example of how to apply them to phishing. The chapter focuses on presenting the media depictions and teasing out possible critical inquiry stances (through personal and community worldviews). The first advertisement describes the point of contention is that we ought to drastically reduce water (the bench is two-thirds gone). The critical perspective is heightened by the oddness of seeing a park bench with only one-third there. It is important that the symbol presented is a bench. Second Ad is confronts the issue of how we regard people with HIV/AIDS. The point of view it elicits is rather sympathetic to the person in the bubble—presumably the person with HIV/AIDS. And the third is confronts the issue of the effects of smoking on public health.
