ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ways in which this research on the intrinsic motivation hypothesis and other social-psychological research on creativity can be used instead to maintain and enhance creativity. Domain-relevant skills and creativity-relevant skills are difficult or impossible to influence within short spans of time, since these components include such elements as knowledge in the domain, technical skills, facility with creativity heuristics, working styles, cognitive styles, and personality traits. Creativity-training programs continue to increase in popularity, and some research suggests that certain of these programs may be effective in enhancing creativity-relevant processes. In considering means for enhancing creativity, it is important not only to consider each of the separate components of creativity but also to consider their intersection. Creativity-relevant processes can be developed in children by modeling independent, interested creative activity. Children can be helped to discover their creativity intersection by exploring a variety of activities so that they might identify their strongest intrinsic interests.
