ABSTRACT

The Kuomintang, headed by Chiang Kai-shek, and the communists, led by Chen Duxiu, formed an uneasy alliance in the early 1920s under the guidance of the Comintern, the international arm of Soviet communism. Revolutionary China under Mao Zedong was filled with bold ideological pronouncements, grand socialist schemes, and a constant undercurrent of totalitarian governance. The socialist system is the basic system of the People's Republic of China, Disruption of the socialist state by any organization or individual is prohibited. The Cultural Revolution, which lasted from 1965 to the death of Mao in 1976, was a period of enormous upheaval that touched all aspects of Chinese society. Deng Xiaoping will be remembered as the guiding force of China's economic revival and push for modernization. It is important to note that in 1998 Jiang Zemin talked about the prospect of extending elections to counties and provinces and implementing Deng Xiaoping's projection of national elections by 2050.
