ABSTRACT

A new brand of entrepreneurs took over the fate of the city and thereby helped to establish a different generative force for shaping and expanding Milwaukee. They were the industrial entrepreneurs-the men who would construct and benefit from the great technical advances that occurred within the confines of industry, both in Milwaukee and elsewhere. The revolutionary transformations that swept over the marketplace of Milwaukee, producing the industrial institutions of the city as well as the split between capitalists and laborers, would hold very important and decisive consequences for the character of life in the city and for its future prosperity. The growth of the capitalist enterprises and the development of the new industrial marketplace set into motion a powerful chain of events. Not the least consequential were those that unleashed the energies of city government. The public authority that was unleashed in Milwaukee became tangibly evident in the form of the property that municipal government controlled within the city limits.
