ABSTRACT
The seven elementary catastrophes in (6.1) represent normal forms for degenerate critical points of arbitrary smooth functions whose codimension is at most 4. Although this classification certainly is an achievement, the main intention of Catastrophe Theory has not been addressed yet. The following observation is of fundamental importance in pointing out what Catastrophe Theory is really all about.
