ABSTRACT

At a time when the Japanese had on the market a Toyota jeep that was more powerful and far less costly than the British Land Rover jeep, Tate and Lyle was purchasing vehicles from the United Kingdom as part of the policy of satisfying a requirement of the metropolis. They remained completely oblivious to the realities of the day in terms of cost-effective technology for the developing countries. This nationalist movement, vision, and view by the leaders in a number of emerging third world countries led to a pattern of economic development that was by and large inward-looking. That was naturally a consequence of the political and economic trends of the day. One of the consequences of this inward-looking policy was a pattern of economic development that was based on the domestic market of the individual countries. In the case of Trinidad and Tobago, there was another important factor and that was the availability of oil and gas.
