ABSTRACT

Invest in China, says car chief, read the headline of the China Daily, the Chinese government's English-language newspaper. The car chief in question was Don St. Pierre, the president of Beijing Jeep, who several months earlier had been talking about pulling his company out of China. He offered his investment advice at a gathering of foreign businessmen and Chinese officials during ceremonies sponsored by the Chinese government to mark the beginning of the spring festival, the Chinese new year, in January 1987. The greater China's stake in Beijing Jeep, the higher the costs if American Mo-tors were to pull out. And the higher the costs were for China, the more Chinese leaders would let American Motors have its way. The US embassy in Beijing held occasional briefings for the American business community.
