ABSTRACT

Policy deba tes a b o u t r ights and enti t iements in relation to A I D S are l imited to those publ ics w h o can articulate their concerns in acceptable and systematic ways. B e c a u s e the n o n g a y h o m o p h o b i c publ ic continually confused the virus with social g r o u p s rather than activities and has i gno red class and ideologica l i ssues , gays and A I D S have b e c o m e co te rminous and the c o m m u n i t y bo th li­ beled and pol i t ic ized. C o n c e r n remains , however , no t a b o u t correc t ing the pub l ic ' s irrational fear and c o n d e m n a t i o n o f gays or increasing A I D S educa­ tion but a b o u t creat ing sympathy for " i n n o c e n t " vict ims, like R y a n White and , now, Arthur Ashe .
