ABSTRACT

I f we are no t certain why peop le d o or d o no t volunteer for a cause , we are equally as uncertain as to what keeps them in volunteer organiza t ions . Even the variables used to predict w h o will volunteer d o no t s eem to indicate w h o will stay a volunteer over t ime. A I D S volunteer ism burnou t is a real p h e n o m e ­ non , occur r ing after a b o u t nine m o n t h s o f service. After a brief respi te , A I D S volunteers return for a few m o r e m o n t h s o f work but often d o tasks other than direct carepartnering.
