Volunteer ing m a y serve to p l u g the g a p s when o n e is be tween j o b s , it can serve to fill leisure hours , and it is o n e way o f mainta in ing self-esteem and an active life dur ing ret irement. B y filling a vo id , the voluntary organiza t ion sup­ posed ly prevents personal d i sorganiza t ion , menta l b reakdown, suic ide , delin­ quency, cr ime, cor rup t ion , and general disorder . Likewise , there are implicit social pressures and professional rewards in a democra t ic society that also m a k e volunteer ism bo th likely and necessary.
